The screenmode prefs problem is related to Dopus.
Or rather the free source version of Dopus that can be found on Aminet.
Once you shut that down the screenmode prefs chang works ok.
(At least this was the cause on my system,
it IS possible that other things may interfer, but try to close Dopus
if you have it running.)
